Michelle Carter, 20, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by a Massachusetts judge for the 2014 death of her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III.
Roy poisoned himself by inhaling carbon monoxide in his car after Michelle sent him a series of disturbing text messages urging Roy, 18, to take his own life. Michelle could now send up to 20 years in prison for the crime.
The prosecutors built their case largely on the hundreds of text messages sent by Michelle to Conrad encouraging him to commit suicide and berating him for chickening out a few times. Meanwhile, the defense argued that Michelle was a delusional teen who was caught in Conrad’s dramatic journey to end his life.
She will be sentenced on August 3.
