Victoria Police said on June 5 that they had resolved a “hostage situation” in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton. Police said a woman had been held against her will, and that the hostage-taker shot a man dead. The hostage-taker was killed by police.
Around 4 pm, Victoria Police responded to reports of an explosion on Bay Street in Brighton. The Herald Sun reported that police officers arrived to find the body of a man in the foyer of a building. while the suspect was holed up in an apartment with the woman.
Police said they were negotiating with the man.
The Age reported gunshots were heard around 6 pm; the police were seen removing a body a short time later.
