Donald Trump Jr. reportedly retweeted a post which features a right-wing conspiracy theory about the Clintons that has been debunked, notes CNN.
The tweet from @StockMonsterUSA reads, “President Clinton fired his FBI director on July 19th, 1993, The Day before Vince Foster was found dead in Marcy Park. #ThursdayThoughts.”
According to The Hill, “The supposed connection between Clinton's ousting of the FBI director and the death of his aide has long been a conspiracy theory popular among some Republicans, with the implication that Clinton was somehow involved in Foster's death.”
In fact, the Washington Post reported about a year ago that then-candidate Trump had brought up the theory himself, telling the newspaper that Foster “knew everything that was going on, and then all of a sudden he committed suicide.”
He was then quoted as saying, “I don’t know enough to really discuss it….I will say there are people who continue to bring it up because they think it was absolutely a murder.”
However, the Post pointed out that none of the five investigations into Foster's death uncovered evidence of anything other than a suicide.
CNN, which broke the story about Trump Jr.’s retweet, says he decided to promote the allegations “in an apparent effort to defend his father's firing of FBI Director James Comey.”
The White House has faced backlash over the sudden dismissal, particularly amid speculation that it was prompted, at least in part, by Comey’s continuing investigation into ties between Russia and Trump associates, notes The Hill.
The president’s son appears to have since deleted the post from his feed.
