There are plenty of opinions on when liposuction should be performed with a tummy tuck. Traditionally decades ago, the combination procedure was not recommended due to the lack of knowledge on how liposuction will ultimately affect the result of the tummy tuck and possibly increase the rate of complications. For this reason, it was recommended to have liposuction before or after a tummy tuck.
Over the past decade, more and more studies have shown that the combination procedure is safe and just as effective to be performed at the same time. People used to believe that doing both procedures simultaneously will remove more from the skin and fat that has already been extracted.
When we perform a tummy tuck, we lift the skin and fat from the abdomen. Performing liposuction on top of that can increase complication rates significantly. With the hourglass tummy tuck, I perform liposuction at the same time as it is the only way to provide an hourglass shape for a better result.
When it comes to performing liposuction with a tummy tuck, it is based on the personal opinion of the surgeon as well as his training and what he feels comfortable performing. There is nothing wrong in performing liposuction before or after a tummy tuck. The problem is that you are going to need to wait about 6 months again to perform either procedure. In addition, both procedures require the patient to go under general anesthesia separately. By performing liposuction with tummy tuck at the same time, you are going to have just as excellent results and save more time.
