How to prevent blood clots after plastic surgery

Anytime there is a surgical procedure, there is a risk of having blood clots. This is an understandable cause for concern, but there are certain things you can do to prevent them.
For starters, whenever you have a cosmetic procedure, you need to realize that bedrest is not something that you should be doing. Patients believe that after surgery you need to rest a while to make the body heal faster, but the problem is that when you are on bedrest, blood tends to pool. When the blood is not circulating, it triggers a cascade of reactions that turns into a blood clot in the leg. When a blood clot occurs in the leg, it can go to the lung and create a pulmonary embolism, which can essentially cause death. Therefore one of the things that you need to do after surgery is to stay active, not to the point of rigorous exercise, but to walk around every 3 to 4 hours for about 5 to 10 minutes. If you need to drink or eat, get out of bed and go to the kitchen yourself. Do not let anybody pamper you so much that you become immobile. By moving around, you improve the circulation, decreasing the chances of a blood clot.
The second thing is to drink a lot of fluids. Patients are recommended to drink lots of Gatorade, which have electrolytes and nutrients that will help keep you not only hydrated, but also prevent blood clots. When you keep yourself hydrated, you prevent the blood from getting thick.
The use of blood thinners is a topic of great discussion in the plastic surgery community. I tend to use blood thinners only during tummy tucks, but not for buttock augmentation. Tummy tucks require more effort from the patient to recover. There is more pain, causing patients to prefer bedrest. In addition, if the surgery is combined with liposuction, there will be more inflammation, so I routinely put patients on blood thinners the day after surgery. To do so right after surgery will increase the risk of bleeding after surgery. I typically put patients on blood thinners for about 5 to 7 days after a tummy tuck. We will teach you how to use the blood thinners and provide you a kit in order for you to perform these on a daily basis in the morning. If you follow these recommendations, you will significantly decrease the risk of having blood clots. That does not mean it will no longer happen, but the chances will be much less.
