Afghanistan’s defense ministry said on April 22 that more than 100 soldiers had been killed in an attack the day before in an army base in Mazar-e Sharif in northern Balkh province.

The ministry’s statement blamed Taliban fighters for the attack. BBC reported that the group had claimed responsibility for it.

Reuters cited an unnamed official as saying the death toll could be as high as 140.

This footage shows security forces outside the base after the attack.
