Russia staged large-scale land, air and sea drills in the annexed Crimean peninsula.

The drills which lasted three days involved four missile-carrying vessels, several thousand of ground troops, artillery units, tanks and twelve military jets.

It is the second time in less than two months such major exercises are being staged in Crimea.

In March the Russian defence ministry held massive paratrooper drills in Crimea.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. The annexation prompted the United States and the European Union to impose sanctions on Russia, plunging Western relations with the Kremlin to their worst level since the Cold War. Western countries condemned the annexation.

Moscow says an overwhelming majority of Crimeans voted to become part of Russia in a 2014 referendum wanting protection from what the Kremlin cast as an illegal coup in Kiev.
