Thousands of demonstrators marched in Frankfurt and Berlin on Sunday (April 2), expressing affection for a unified Europe.

Marching through the streets in Frankfurt and gathering in Berlin's historic Gendarmenmarkt public square, several held placards of 'The Pulse of Europe' movement - a grassroots initiative started in Frankfurt with the aim to keep Europe united.

"It is very important for me that Europe remains Europe, because Europe is a power for peace" said demonstrator Johann Hoika.

Demonstrators have been gathering for several non-partisan rallies on Sundays across German city in recent months, as angst has increased following Britain's decision to leave the bloc.

Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Britain's withdrawal from the European Union under Article 50 of the EU treaty on Wednesday (March 29). The country should be out in two years.
