Ex-First Lady of Ivory Coast Found Not Guilty of War Crimes

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — A court in Ivory Coast on Tuesday acquitted a former first lady of war crimes and crimes against humanity after a trial
that focused on her role in abuses that led to the deaths of thousands after an election in 2010.

for conducting an incomplete investigation into Ms. Gbagbo’s role in the abuses.
She has also been indicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, but Ivory Coast has refused to transfer her.
The prosecution had asked for a life sentence, saying she was part of a committee
that organized abuses against supporters of her husband’s opponent after the 2010 election.
