A man who had planned on flying on the passenger plane which crashed in Ukraine on Thursday has told of his shock upon hearing that it had gone down.

Barry Sim and his wife Izzy had intended to fly to Kuala Lumpur on the Malaysia airlines flight which was shot down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday while carrying 295 people, but changed to a later flight at the last minute.

"We couldn't get both on the flight this morning, so we changed it to the KLM one (scheduled to fly later the same day)," he said.
"I just feel sorry for all the families," he added.

As plumes of black smoke rose up near a rebel-held village of Hrabove, an Associated Press journalist counted at least 22 bodies at the wreckage site 25 miles from the Russian border.

The Boeing 777-200ER plane, travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, appeared to have broken up before impact and the burning wreckage - which included body parts and the belongings of passengers - was scattered over a wide area.
