World Water Day, on the 22nd of March every year, is about taking action to tackle the water crisis. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home, spending countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources, and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water. Every 90 seconds, a child dies from a water related disease.
Celebrity stylist, TV personality, and Co-Owner/Creative Director of LAPALME Magazine Derek Warburton has been appointed as Just a Drop Goodwill Ambassador. Just a Drop is an international water aid charity, which was set up in 1998. Fiona Jeffery, the charity’s founder, learned that just £1 can deliver clean water to a child for up to 10 years. Just a Drop was born, based on the premise that if people can be encouraged to give a little then collectively we can make a huge difference.
Two weeks ago, Warburton and JAD headed to Nicaragua to build wells for schools with no running water. Children and woman would walk miles every day, 3x per day in order to retrieve 20 liters of water at a time, which they carried on head, just to survive the day, in the 90-degree weather.
Statistics:
3rd poorest country in the Western hemisphere and the poorest country in central America.
2 million people don’t have access to adequate sanitation
800,000 people don’t have access to safe water
In rural areas, such as those where we’re working, only 54% of the people have access to adequate sanitation
An average family where we are working will live on around $80 a month
In addition to clean water, JAD brings sanitation facilities and hygiene education to some of the poorest communities across the world, transforming lives. Warburton is working with Just a Drop to highlight the importance of access to clean water and sanitation: currently 1 in 10 people globally are without clean water, and a child dies every 90 seconds from a dirty water-related disease.
“I’m excited to work with an organization whose mission is to reduce child mortality by delivering accessible clean, safe water and suitable sanitation where it is needed most,” Warburton said. “We all have the right as citizens of the world to have fresh water and this should never be neglected.”
