A little sponge may have a big impact – saving the oceans from oil spills. The sponge can absorb up to 90 times its own weight in oil. Unlike other materials, it can be reused hundreds of times, then squeezed out to save the spilled oil. The foam material is coated with oil-attracting silane molecules. Large-scale tests have already proven successful. Argonne National Laboratory is currently looking for commercial partners to help fully develop the sponge.
