On Thursday, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly featured a guest named Nils Bildt who was billed as “Swedish Defense and National Security Advisor,” but after the interview aired, Swedish officials said they were not familiar with him.
Questions have been raised about the true background and credentials of a guest commentator who appeared on Fox News’ O’Reilly Factor Thursday, reports the Guardian.
His name appeared on screen as Nils Bildt, and he was described as a “Swedish Defense and National Security Advisor.”
Host Bill O’Reilly had been interviewing him and Swedish reporter Anne-Sofie Naslund about the country’s safety level after President Trump had alluded to problems there.
Disputing Naslund's comment that Sweden still is "one of the safest and most peaceful countries on Earth," Bilt said the problems pertaining to immigrants are "not being openly and honestly discussed."
Since the segment aired, many Swedish officials and security experts have said they are not familiar with Bilt.
Fox News and Bilt issued brief statements defending their respective positions.
Bilt told Mediaite, “Suffice to say I am an independent political advisor. Fox News is solely responsible for the header or title used. I cannot comment on that. Sorry for any confusion caused, but needless to say I think that is not really the issue, the issue is Swedish refusal to discuss their social problems and issues.”
Meanwhile, a Fox News spokesperson noted, “Our booker made numerous inquiries and spoke to people who recommended Nils Bildt and after pre-interviewing him and reviewing his bio, we agreed that he would make a good guest for the topic that evening.”
O’Reilly reportedly plans to talk about the controversy on his show Monday.
