A suspect fleeing a North Portland shooting early Monday morning was quickly caught and arrested by police officers nearby.
The victim, a man in his 50s, is in serious condition after being shot in the head, according to Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson.
The shooting happened at about midnight Monday at Unthank Plaza, in the 2500 block of North Williams Avenue. Arriving officers found the injured man, who was able to provide suspect information before being taken to a nearby hospital.
Sandra Palmer, who lives inside the apartment complex, said she heard thumping Monday morning. Then she saw blood.
“I didn’t see nothing but blood in the elevators and down the rug," Palmer said. "Everywhere. It’s everywhere. We’re scared.”
Police caught the suspect, 63-year-old Danny Ray Howie, about two blocks from the scene as he was trying to drive away, Simpson said. Howie was jailed on a charge of first-degree assault.
