A new “breathalyzer” doesn’t detect drunkenness – instead, it can diagnose 17 diseases, including Parkinson’s and several cancers. The NaNose was developed by researchers at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. The device looks at breath for what researchers call volatile molecules, which indicate specific diseases. According to senior researcher Dr. Yoav Broza, it’s similar to the way that a dog can be trained to detect the smell of drugs or explosives

An initial trial of over 1,400 subjects yielded successful diagnoses 86% of the time. The researchers hope to bring the NaNose to the U.S., with a smartphone prototype expected in about two years.
