On Thursday, the Syrian armed forces announced that the city of Aleppo — long the epicenter of that country’s bloody civil war — was officially under their control. The loss, by the rebels fighting forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, could mark a big step towards the end of the conflict.

But, for the vast numbers of ordinary Syrians driven from their homes during the conflict, there is no end in sight. Refugees evacuated from the fighting in Aleppo are still largely in camps, and woefully unequipped to deal with the worsening winter weather. A camp in Azaz, at the Turkey-Syria border, was recently hit with snowfall, endangering many of those who live there, especially children.

The United Nations estimates that a staggering 11 million Syrians have fled during the wars, with 4.6 million seeking refuge abroad and another 6.6 million displaced inside the country.
