A massive ice crack is forcing British researchers to leave their base in Antarctica. The Halley VI polar research base will be shut down between March and November, for the Antarctic winter. The huge crack first appeared in the Brunt Ice Shelf in October 2016 just 10.5 miles away from the station where 88 people currently work, only 16 people were originally scheduled to stay through the winter. The researchers aren’t in any immediate danger, but a rescue attempt would be nearly impossible during winter.
