Here is Toyota Camry 2000 model which is not starting. The car had come from another work shop with timing cover open. The replaced the crank position sensor on the hope to start the car but in-vein. Here is the diagnostic and repair for such a problem.

Car no start condition is very common fault and very troublesome as well. There are four main causes of car no start condition. no. 1 is no spark, 2. no fuel 3. no compression, 4 timing issue. The no. 1 and no. 2 are two very common reasons of no start condition. whereas the no. 3 is a fault sometimes occurring. No. 4 is not very common but is real troublesome is occurred. There is jumped timing chain or belt is main cause for such problem and secondly this occurs if an engine for a car is overhauled and somebody may not fix the timing chain or belt correctly.

No spark no start is very common among all causes of no start. That is sometimes purely electrical and sometimes it could be electromechanical reason. Wiring, fuse, switch, relay, points, ignition module, ignition coil, ignition wires or spark plugs are responsible for no ignition if anything out of them went bad. That could be electrical reason. Whereas distributor, cap, rotor etc are mechanical causes of no spark condition. if there is no spark available for an engine, it needs through testing of the system and system understanding is a must in such a case. The system repair manual, factory manual or work shop manual is something very helpful to understand all systems on a car. So if you encounter such a situation you must have to have the system wiring diagram in hand and a few basic tools to test all systems on a car. Repair of such car is not very difficult but it is very time consuming to troubleshoot such a no spark situation. There are a few components used in ignition system. among them is points, wiring, capacitor or condenser, cdi module, ignition module, ignition coil and some times ECU or PCM. In modern cars the ECU is responsible for driving ignition coils. The inputs to ECU are very important and they are crank signal and cam signals. crank and cam signals can be observed on oscilloscope. Whereas other voltages can be tested using a multi meter. This is important for a technician working on a car to must know the use of oscilloscope and multi meter. unfortunately some technician only know how to use a test lamp and even very limited use of test lamp they know. They don't know how to use a multi meter or an oscilloscope. So then in such a case they are not able to properly troubleshoot such systems. instead they just replace parts by guessing them that they could be failed. In this way they are just wasting money and time for no success. testing is way easy, cheap and less time consuming compared to parts change. parts changers are everywhere in the automotive field. They are throwing part in cars without understanding the fault. A successful mechanic would always test and pinpoint the problem and remove the cause of the problem in the way that the problem must not repeat again in future. If problem will repeat in future that will not be a successful repair instead that will be a time passed repair. unfortunately test equipment is very expensive and mechanics are not about to invest any money in their test equipment. Especially mechanics with old mind just think that the only tools require for car repair would be screw drivers, spanners, pliers and socket sets. They don;t have concept of modern tools like oscilloscope or scanner. They think they can do without the use of such tools. Then for sure they fails when critical fault comes and they try to repair such a car with conventional testing and tools. mostly such bad condition cars are latter on sold to junk yard to which mechanics become tired to start. Even sometimes the defect may be very small like a wire cut, a bad ground or a bad positive connection or sometimes a bad fuse. No fuel no start could be a wiring problem, melt fuse, bad ground, bad fuel pump or restricted fuel filter. There is sometimes security issue with cars which is ECu is not allowing fuel to engine. In such a case security reprogramming of ecu or some other electrical repair is a must for such car. in no fuel also testing is a must to solve problem. one can test every possible cause and reason and repair accordingly. one can test in such condition by putting little quantity of fuel to the air intake and try to start the car. if the car comes to start, it means it is a fuel related problem which must be addressed. restricted filter needs cleaning or sometimes replacement. filter blockage or restriction is also a big reason for no fuel no start defect. if ecu is bad it needs new or used ecu from another car. the ecu first needs coding to code security key to allow the car to start. this will be covered in some other video.
