Currently, there are four types of surfaces used for playgrounds. These range from engineered wood fiber (EWF), Poured-in-Place (PIP), rubber mulch, and rubber tiles. Below are the differences between the four, to better help in selecting the best playground surfacing material to use.

• Engineered Wood Fiber - Also called EWF, this material is made from natural wood that is the leftovers from lumber manufacturers. As this is recycled, ad often virgin timber, there are no chemicals in the wood chips, so they are non-toxic and do not contain any artificial ingredients. However, Fiber does not recommend recycled brands of EWF due to the possibility that metal shavings may be of the material.

• Poured-in-Place - Also known as PIP, this material is made from urethane, recycled tires, and rubber granules that are brought together on site, mixed, and then poured. It is then laid with a top layer known as wear course, which can be a durable and colorful rubber or a turf-like material. The result is a flat and cushioned material.

• Rubber Mulch - Mainly made from recycled tires that are cleaned, and sometimes colored, this playground surface is a sea of rubber. Chunks and shredded bits of rubber are what this playground surface is made of, so it is a lot like EWF, only it is made of rubber and not wood.

• Rubber Tiles - Normally made from recycled tires, these tiles are non-toxic and placed together into one giant tile. Unlike PIP, this material is made only from tires and has a less cushion to it.
