Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) is an excellent action/arcade shooter game based in the Star Wars universe. It features a single-player campaign that follows the exploits of the 501st Legion from the Clone Wars to the rise of the Galactic Empire. The game (along with its prequel) paved the way for the modern Star Wars: Battlefront game, which certainly looks prettier and more realistic. Even so, Battlefront II holds up nearly 12 years later, and thousands of mods have been made for it. This game has a ton of play value, even long after you have beaten the main campaign.

BF2 is designed to be played in 1st person, but I have always played it in 3rd person, using a gamepad rather than the mouse and keyboard (this requires a lot of remapping in the controls, but for me it's worth it). In its heyday, it also featured multiplayer support, but that service has been discontinued (there are, however, some fan-operated multiplayer servers out there).

Although primarily a "ground-pounding" game similar to Call of Duty, BF2 does feature space combat (as seen in the video). It's not as deep as the old X-Wing and TIE Fighter games, but it's very exciting, and a lot of fun - feels very much like the space battles in the films. The "Space Assault" mode hinges around scoring points by either shooting down bogeys, or taking out systems on the enemy's capital ship (communications, engines, life support, accompanying frigates, etc.). Unfortunately, there are no cockpit overlays in 3rd person (although some mods out there fix that), so I normally play the space matches in 3rd person as well.

BF2 is still available for purchase through either Steam or GOG, and you can find a ton of mods for it on moddb.
