The title is a play on John Donne's Devotions upon Emergent Occasions, For Whom the Bell Tolls, which is itself an allusion to John Donne's famous Meditation XVII.
The game has been referred to in English as The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls by Masahiro Sakurai, during development of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
The game engine was used for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
