The Supreme Court today upheld Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt's Arms Act conviction and sentenced him to 5 years imprisonment for his role in the 1993 bomb blasts case. The court also gave Sanjay a period of four weeks to surrender.
However, the 'Munna Bhai' actor, who has already served nearly 18 months in jail, will now have to go to prison and serve the remaining term, which comes upto three and a half years of jail time. Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to a jail term of six years on July 31, 2007, for illegal possession of firearms acquired from terrorist acquaintances, who were responsible for the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. The apex court said that it agreed with the TADA court's decision to acquit him of terror charges but not the offences under Arms Act for possessing and later destroying weapons.
Dutt was accused of possessing weapons given by terror outfits, who had been responsible for the serial blasts that shook the city on March 12, 1993. A total of 257 persons were killed and 713 others injured, following the 13 coordinated explosions.
