Speaking to The Washington Post on Tuesday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said he hopes the extreme rhetoric utilized in the election about Islamic extremism does not drive away or isolate American Muslims. “American Muslim communities right now are concerned, they are worried,” Johnson said. “I think it’s unfortunate that CVE (countering violent extremism) has been somewhat hijacked by the political debate about Islamic extremism versus Islamic extremism,” Johnson said. “To refer to what is happening when you’re talking about home-grown violent extremism as Islamic extremism is counterproductive to building bridges to the Islamic community.”
