On the same day that 111 federal inmates incarcerated for low-level drug crimes had their sentences commuted by President Barack Obama, the Drug Enforcement Agency announced plans to expand The War On Drugs. On August 31st, The DEA said it will temporarily categorize the plant kratom, a plant commonly used to combat opioid addiction, as a “Schedule I” drug, categorizing it alongside LSD, heroin, and marijuana. The categorization, which takes affect beginning Sept. 30th, makes it so kratom has “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” But drug policy advocates are decrying the move, saying it could be prohibiting the development of a plant that’s showing promise in relieving pain and combating opioid addiction.
