Nikolay sustained an injury while riding his quad bike. It was so bad that he couldn’t walk for nine months. He also developed a blood infection that led to encephalopathy – brain dysfunction – as well as cirrhosis of the liver. His doctors feared he would die, but Nikolay was determined to recover. He joined the organ transplant waiting list and learnt to walk again. Finally, a suitable liver was found.

His wife and son help and support him in every way they can. Nikolay himself stays optimistic and cracks jokes even while in hospital, waiting for his surgery. His doctors, however, are cautious of making any prognosis about the surgery’s outcome as his case is a difficult one.

Sklifosovsky Institute, aka Sklif: a name known to every Moscovite, and many Russians too. Here, battles against death are fought every minute of every day. It takes the best to win.
