Most people get a wart at some point in their lives. Warts are small, rough lumps or growths on your skin caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). You can get them anywhere, but warts are most common on your hands, knees and feet. A wart on the sole of your foot is called a verruca.

Warts and verrucas usually go away on their own, although this can take months or years. In most people they don’t really need to be treated, but lots of over-the-counter treatments are available from your pharmacy. Your pharmacist may suggest speaking to your GP if these treatments haven’t worked for you.

Warts and verrucas are common all over the world. No one’s sure exactly how many people get them, but they are most common in school-aged children and young adults.

Warts and verrucas are usually harmless and go away by themselves. In children, about half go away within a year, and about two-thirds disappear within two years. It may take longer for warts and verrucas to clear up for adults – in some cases up to 10 years.

You're more likely to develop warts and verrucas if your immune system is weakened. In these situations your warts may be large, cover a wide area and be harder to treat.
