German Foreign Minister Franck-Walter Steinmeier has met the Turkish President on a day when relations between the two partners appeared tense. Steinmeier faced a tirade from his opposite number about what he called the EU’s “two-faced” attitude towards his country.
Thorny issues also include migrants, human rights after July’s failed coup, and refusal by Berlin to extradite coup suspects.
“I’m here to get own impression of what has happened on the 15th of July here around this parliament. I want to assure you that we in Germany have great respect for the people of Turkey who were defending their democratic institutions here this night. Thanks,” said Steinmeier.
Few smiles appeared at the meeting, but the earlier dialogue with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, who told him Turkey was “fed up” had been much worse.
