One thing that is pretty much a universal truth is that a first date can either be the best thing to ever happen to you—or the absolute worst. It doesn't matter how long you've been talking to your date or how well you've gotten to know each other; the minute you slip up, it's game over.

The worst part is finally meeting someone who shows serious potential...only for it to end in total disaster. So why DID your first date go so horribly, horribly wrong? Let's get to the bottom of this.

Think about it. Did you make a major faux pas during your date night?

It goes without saying that we all have deal breakers—which means that yes, your date does too! Let's face it; no matter how small, there are certain things that really turn us off.

There is nothing worse than feeling like you blew it and never getting the chance to know why. But Dating Coach Dina Colada is going to let you in on a little secret. Even though it may not seem like it at the time, there are a few common first date mistakes that are actually avoidable.

In fact, there are five that scratch the surface of a much deeper problem.

So how can you make sure that you don't sabotage your date?

According to a study by AXA, your date decides whether or not he's interested in just twelve minutes—which means you definitely don't have any time to waste!

The study (which surveyed over 2,000 people) revealed that "people [are] judged on little things such as their smile (64 percent), eye contact (58 percent) and tone of voice (25 per cent) before their potential suitor decides if the date was a success." Yikes!

Still not convinced? Match.com confirms this by saying that "singles have clear 'must haves' and 'deal breakers' in mind. And according to a broad national survey of almost 5,500 unattached adults 21 and older, those qualities, attitudes and expectations illustrate cultural shifts in how singles approach relationships."

So let's be real. If you do any (or all) of the things Dina Colada mentions in the video, you can pretty much say goodbye to that second date. So do yourself a favor. If you want a shot at love, start putting in the effort.

So what if dating isn't an exact science? That doesn't mean you can't pull out all of the stops.

Trust us, you'll get through your love slump in no time.
