The worldwide smartwatch market experienced a round of growing pains in the third quarter of 2016, resulting in a year-over-year decline in shipment volumes. Shipments of smartwatches during the third quarter of 2016 dropped 51.6% year-over-year to 2.7 million devices, according to a Monday report by research firm International Data Corporation. IDC explains that low growth persisted in the third quarter because Google’s decision to delay Android Wear 2.0 may have forced OEMs to push their new Android Wear smartwatches to 2017, while Apple’s new watchOS update didn’t arrive before the end of September. Apple remains the leading smartwatch maker, but it has also seen fewer people interested in its tech-enabled timepiece this year than in 2015.
