[] I lived for 2.5 years in a small city in Germany which had a number of large, above-ground concrete bunkers from WW2. Some had been re-appropriated into nightclubs or music-studios. One particular shelter was abandoned, over-grown and covered in bullet holes. It was a spectacular sight!

There is also a huge difference in the impact of the storm just a few miles from the center. Forecasters can't accurately predict where the worst damage will be for the storm far enough in advance for evacuation to be practical at that point, so larger scale evacuations are typically called for as a precaution. Sometimes evacuated areas see very little impact from the storm due to a last minute shift in the path of the storm. Sometimes areas are obliterated that weren't expected to see much damage at all.

tl,dr; You got lucky, not everyone does and its better to be cautious with your life and your family than be "brave" to ride it out.
