Fall is known for the changing colors of leaves, and the best place to witness these stunning views in the U.S., according to Travel + Leisure, is Lake Placid, New York.
The media outlet states, “Red and silver maples, birch, aspen, oaks, and beech trees stretch out along the Olympic Trail scenic byway (which runs through Lake Placid), providing a striking show of color for its 170 miles.”
The town is located in upstate New York’s Adirondack Mountains.
Elevation plays a role in the timing of leaf changes, with the area’s website pointing out that “in the High Peaks Region around Lake Placid, peak foliage viewing occurs during the last two weeks of September while the autumn colors bloom later in the lower elevations...”
It goes on to explain that the leaves turn different hues because cooler temperatures eventually result in less chlorophyll which means the bright green color recedes and allows others to emerge.
