Notes: The Georgia Bulldogs finished play a season ago with a record of 10-3. The team earned a berth into the Taxslayer Bowl where they defeated Penn St by the score of 24-17. Kirby Smart the former Alabama defensive coordinator takes over as head coach. Smart will have eight starters back on offense and six on the defense. There is a battle for the starting quarterback position between Greyson Lambert, freshman Jacob Eason and junior Brice Ramsey. Whoever wins the job will have plenty of playmakers back this year. Nick Chubb ran for 747 yards last year with seven touchdowns and 8.1 yards per carry average. Sony Michel was a workhorse as the junior ran it 219 times in 2015 for 1161 yards with eight touchdowns and 5.3 yards per rush average. The Bulldogs struggled on the offensive end of the field as the team was 104th ranked in the passing game. They averaged 26.3 points per game which was 85th in the nation. That is why 2015 starter Greyson Lambert is in danger of becoming a backup in the upcoming season. Georgia was the seventh best defense from college football by giving up 306 yards per game and the best passing defense in the nation.

North Carolina finished the campaign with a mark of 11-3. They faced Baylor in the Russell Athletic Bowl where they were beaten 49-38. Head coach Larry Fedora enters his fifth year with the school. He has seven starters back on offense and seven to the defense. The Tar Heels will start junior Mitch Trubisky at quarterback and will have all his playmakers in the passing game back from last season. Trubisky was the backup to Marquise Williams who exited the program. Running back Elijah Hood an junior led the team on the ground with 1463 yards on 219 carries and combined for a team high of 17 touchdowns. Hood averaged 6.7 yards per carry last season.
