On the evening of August 15, a cancer patient suffered a fatal beating at an Illinois clinic complex, reports the Chicago Tribune.
At the time of the attack, 46-year-old Shannon Vincel of Springfield, Missouri was waiting for a shuttle outside of her guest quarter at the Zion branch of Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
According to authorities, a man approached the woman and struck her on the head with an as yet unidentified object.
Vincel was taken to an area hospital, but succumbed to "severe head trauma" the next day, notes the Washington Post.
Her mother spoke with KMOV, noting, “Shannon was so kind and she didn’t deserve this, no one deserves this. Being a cancer victim, for someone to deliberately take her life it’s unthinkable to me."
Though there is video surveillance of the attack, police have yet to identify the attacker.
Cancer Treatment Centers of America is offering a $25,000 reward for information regarding the beating, reports KSDK.
Funeral services for Vincel were held on Tuesday.
