This week in DVB debate, the studio asks “ What happens after the white cards expires?”
Temporary Residents Certificates, which is known as white cards, expired in March 2015 and must be returned to the authorities by the end of May. People raise their concern over legal identification if the cards are taken back.
White cards or TRC's were first issued in 1993 under the State Law and Order Restoration Council. According to the ministry of immigration, there are about 700,000 white-card holders around the country and most of them are muslims living in Rakhine state.
The constitutional tribunal decided that the white card holders can not vote in the upcoming election. However, the white card holders could vote both in the 2008 referendum and 2010 general election.
