Fifteen inmates from the Guantanamo prison were transferred to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), U.S. officials said on Monday, the single largest transfer of Guantanamo detainees during the Obama administration.
The transfer of 12 Yemeni nationals and three Afghans to the UAE comes amid a renewed push to whittle down the number of detainees held at the U.S. prison in Cuba that President Barack Obama aims to close.
The transfer bring the remaining population of the detention centre down to 61.
Most detainees have been held without charge or trial for more than a decade, drawing international condemnation.
