ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN — Two bailiffs were shot and killed by a prisoner at a courthouse in St. Joseph, Michigan on Monday before police shot the gunman dead.
The inmate was being escorted to court from a holding cell on the third floor of the Berrien County Courthouse when he grabbed a sheriff’s deputy’s gun, WZZM reported.
Police identified the gunman as Larry Gordon, 45, who was being held on numerous felony charges.
Gordon shot and injured sheriff’s deputy James Atterberry, 41, before killing court bailiffs Joe Zangaro, 61, and Ron Kienzle, 63. Both of the deceased were retired police officers.
Gordon also shot civilian Kenya Ellis in the arm as he tried to escape, before he was shot dead by police officers.
Atterberry and Ellis were both taken to the hospital for treatment.
