A south-NSW man discovered a skimming device attached to an ANZ ATM in Kiama on July 22. Skimming devices are used to capture sensitive information such as card numbers and PIN codes from people accessing the machine. Eli Maguire said he noticed the slot had been tampered with and took a video of himself detaching the device from the ATM in Kiama and showing the electronics beneath.
“Boom, there you go,” Maguire said.
He said he showed the bank (and cancelled his card in the process) and authorities were contacted. NSW Police confirmed the presence of the device and established a crime scene.
“A few months ago, I watched something on YouTube and it was just something I had in the back of my mind and I knew what to look for,” Maguire told Storyful.
“The actual space around the skimmer unit looked a bit suss, it had a light plasticy feel about it and I gave it a little bit of a tug and felt movement there.” Credit: Eli Maguire
