Suspects detained under suspicion of involvement in the abortive coup attempt over the weekend in Turkey appeared at a court in Istanbul for the first time on Wednesday (July 20).
Buses brought hundreds of detainees to the Caglayan Court House who were led to the building in handcuffs. Those that appeared in court on Wednesday included dozens of people detained at military school in connection with the coup, local media reported.
Tight security was put in place outside the courts ahead of the hearing with vehicles transporting the detainees under close monitor.
Turkey is set to announce emergency measures on Wednesday to try to shore up stability and prevent damage to the economy as it purges thousands of members of the security forces, judiciary, civil service and academia.
Around 50,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants and teachers have been suspended or detained since the military coup attempt, raising tensions across the country of 80 million which borders Syria's chaos and is a Western ally against Islamic State.
