Around 80 people were detained at a military high school in Istanbul on Saturday (July 16) in connection with a military coup attempt, according to privately-owned Dogan news agency.

The overthrow attempt collapsed after crowds answered President Tayyip Erdogan's call to take to the streets and dozens of rebels abandoned their tanks.

Forces loyal to Turkey's government fought on to crush the last remnants of the coup attempt in which more than 160 people were killed including civilians.

Erdogan accused the coup plotters of trying to kill him and launched a purge of the armed forces, which last used force to stage a successful coup more than 30 years ago.
