Cats are certainly fluffy bundles of joy and love, but, under certain conditions, their bites can prove fatal to humans, notes the Daily Mail.
A recently published paper in the World Journal of Clinical Cases highlights a very rare case in which a Canadian man passed away weeks after his cat nipped him on the thumb.
When the individual first went to the hospital he was exhibiting signs of sepsis, and further examination revealed he was also suffering from an aneurysm in his aorta.
Surgery was performed to replace the affected abdominal piece, but the man passed two weeks later.
The Vancouver Sun is reporting that, "...tests on pieces removed from the aorta wall found the culprit: infection by Pasteurella multocida, bacteria common in pets’ mouths and most often spread by the bite of felines..."
As such, the study authors advise emergency medical professionals take domestic animal bites seriously and consider the possibility of rare but serious complications.
