On growing up with a close friend who stutters:
Hello, my name is Leo and you may be wondering why i am recording a video about stuttering. Well, I’m not a stutterer and I’m also not a speech language therapist but, I’ve grown up with a childhood friend who stutters.
We actually grew up together. We knew each other for like 20 years and we used to play together, watched TV together, watched soccer or football as they call it in the English speaking countries. The experience that he has given me... It’s really different because he actually is a severe stutterer.
I found out about stuttering only after 20 years because right now, I am working in a speech therapy center. That’s right- the center which Ms Magan is working in. I just want to share some experiences that I have with this friend of mine.
You cannot imagine how different it is when you are stuttering and even your close friends around you have high levels of anxiety. They really want to help when you stutter yet they feel absolutely helpless.
At times when we spoke about certain football matches when we were young kids, his face turned red and i did not really know what to do. It was a little difficult for me when we are with other people because i felt he had a lot of things to say. But for a few minutes, he had a block (speech) which technically meant that he could not not speak or he only managed to stutter a few words.
I met him 20 years (maybe 15?) after that and i was amazed to find him speak so fluently. He does not stutter anymore and I knew that he must have gone for speech therapy (In fact, he is now a lecturer teaching in a few countries).
That is why I am doing this video. I feel that if you have a stuttering problem, not just yourself but trust me, your friends around you, will like you to have some help. You can say what you want and say whenever you want it. Everyone around you will be happy for you.
That’s it. I really hope my experience will shed some light on friends or people who stutter and how seeking help for yourself can mean so much to those around you who really care for you. Thank you.
