CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Zoo reopened its gorilla enclosure on Tuesday with strengthened security measures.

The zoo hopes the installation of a new barrier can help avoid a repeat of an incident last month, when 17-year-old gorilla Harambe was shot and killed after a 4-year-old boy fell into the enclosure.

The enclosure's old barrier was 3-feet high, with a stainless steel railing and horizontal cables, Reuters reported. The new one is 6 inches higher, with solid wood beams at the top and bottom, and knotted rope netting. The zoo has also installed three new surveillance cameras.

Additional security measures remain in place, including more than 5-feet of thick bushes and a 15-foot drop to a shallow moat.
