What is it with Akshay Kumar? Every year he will assail us with mindless films like The Shaukeens and Entertainment and then makes up for it by delivering brilliant hits like Baby and Airlift. With Housefull 3 we have yet another of his sinful mindless fares, let’s see how this one shapes up.
In the grand tradition of mindless comedies of Bollywood, Housefull 3 has an excuse of a plot. It tells the tale of three losers played by Akshay, Abhishek and Riteish who fall for three extremely rich but extremely stupid girls played by Jacqueline, Nargis and Lisa. Boman Irani plays the role of the rich daddy who believes his daughters are uber sanskaari, while in fact they are busy living it up in nightclubs and singing songs about how cool they are. In such a scenario, our three dunderheads have to prove to daddy dearest that they are the perfect candidates for the job of marrying his three daughters.
Here’s the problem with Housefull 3, it is exactly like every other masala entertainer that came before it. Once again you will have supporters of the film telling you to leave your brains at home but for those of you who realize this is a practical impossibility, please don’t subject yourself to this film. Except for the wafer thin plot, makers Sajid and Farhad just throw a number of ridiculous gags at you, most of which appear to be whatsapp jokes.
If you are looking for a reason to justify your willingness to watch this movie, let it be Akshay Kumar. His comic timing is brilliant and as ever, making for some truly hilarious moments in the film. Riteish appears almost bored with playing the same kind of character over and over again while Abhishek’s forlorn performance makes you wonder if he was forced to do this film on gunpoint. The three ladies have very identical roles that hardly demand much effort while Boman Irani is effortless as ever.
By now we are sure the audience was already divided the moment this film was announced. Nobody has any illusions as to what a Housefull movie can deliver. The only thing we can add to this is the fact that no, the franchise still hasn’t acquired any class.
