Nepal, Apr 24 (ANI): One year after powerful twin earthquakes ravaged his remote village in Nepal, Purba Namjel Tamang is still living in a tent surrounded by the rubble of his former home. For almost a year he had been holding out for long-promised government assistance to rebuild the family home he finished less than a year before the quake struck. Purba Namjel Tamang's fate is reflected across the country. Two separate earthquakes in April and May killed 9,000 people, injured more than 22,000 and damaged or destroyed nearly 900,000 houses, forcing many to live in shelters built with tarpaulins and iron sheets, even in freezing temperatures. The delays were due to the wrangling between political parties, which left many international donors exasperated. While the official relief effort remains disjointed, civil society organisations and individuals like Surya Bahadur Pariyar have been stepping in to fill the gap. An NGO worker, Pariyar gathered 1500 euros from donors mainly in Germany to help rebuild the school in Ne Sing, where Purba Nanjel Tamang lives. While the challenges facing communities like Ne Sing are formidable, those who chose to leave their villages after the quake now find themselves unable to go back or move forward. The government this month began distributing grants of 200,000 Nepali rupees to families that can prove they owned land before the earthquake.
