Baisakhi, a harvest festival, celebrated with religious fervor

Amritsar, Apr 22 (ANI): Early morning prayers at the sacred Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar mark Baisakhi festival, the beginning of harvest season for farmers. Hundreds of devotees thronged the gurudwaras across Punjab on this auspicious day. The people in Punjab, especially Sikhs, celebrate the festival every year on April 13 with religious fervour. On this day, the 10th Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh, formed Khalsa, or army of Sikh warriors, to fight the Mughals. Baisakhi also marks the Punjabi New Year. People dress up in traditional wear and perform popular folk dance Bhangra'. Processions through towns are also part of the custom. Punjabis and Sikhs across India also celebrate the festival by visiting gurudwaras and praying for bumper harvest.
