Powerful magnitude 7.8 strikes off northwest coast of Ecuador
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake has struck off the coast of Ecuador, 14km north west of Pedernales, at a depth of 10km.
The tremor, which was initially measured as magnitude 7.4 by the US Geological Survey, was strongly felt in the capital Quito.
A preventative tsunami warning has been issued for areas of the Ecuador and Colombia coasts.
"Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
With a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), the quake struck about 173 km west-northwest of Quito and just 28 kilometers south southeast of Muisne, the USGS said.
