HONG KONG — A 42-year-old Hong Kong man fulfilled his childhood dream by building his own robot from scratch.
Ricky Ma, a product designer, grew up watching cartoons, such as Transformers, and dreamt of building his very own robot one day.
About 70 percent of the prototype, known as Mark 1, was made by 3D printing. The 3D printed parts are combined with electronics and mechanical bits before being wrapped in a silicone skin, Reuters reported.
"I figured I should just do it when the timing is right and realize my dream. If I realize my dream, I will have no regrets in life," Ma told Reuters.
Interestingly, Ma did not model his robot prototype after any of the characters in the Transformers but decided to model it after a female Hollywood star. He did not share the name of the star, but the robot looks a lot like sexy actress Scarlett Johansson.
Mark 1 can respond to various programmed verbal commands saved in Ma's laptop. Ma has specially designed her to wink when she receives compliments.
Ma hopes the prototype would attract investors to fund him to build more robots in the future. He is also eager to share his experience with other robot enthusiasts.
