TIFT COUNTY, GA — A 71-year-old teacher of special needs students has been charged with second-degree cruelty to a child after security camera video showed her cruelly kneeing a 4-year-old in the back. If convicted, Amelia Stripling could face up to 10 years in prison.
Taken on March 17, the video shows Stripling approach the 4-year-old student from behind and aggressively knee him in the back. The boy flies forward. Stripling then picks him up and dusts him off as though nothing happened. The poor kid literally did not see it coming.
Another teacher appears at the door, unaware of what just happened. Stripling apparently thought she got away with the callous act. After school officials saw the video and notified the boy's parents, the child's mother reported the incident to police. Stripling resigned the next day after 22 years of teaching.
A warrant was issued for her arrest and Stripling turned herself in. She now faces charges of second-degree cruelty to a child. If convicted, she could serve a prison sentence of as little as a year, or as many as 10 years.
In November 2014, Stripling was recognized for her teaching abilities, receiving the "Excellence in Teaching Award" from the Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence.
