A | A | A (January 11, 2008)—Younger Americans will be getting more stringent drivers' licenses soon.
Under post-9/11 security rules, those born after December 1st of 1964 will be getting more secure licenses crafted by the Homeland Security Department.
The new rules will be unveiled Friday.
Homeland officials say, by 2014, anyone seeking to board an airplane or enter a federal building will have to present a REAL ID Act-compliant driver's license.
There is one notable exception: those more than 50 years old.
The over-50 exemption was created to give states more time to get everyone new licenses, and officials say the risk of someone in that age group being a terrorist, illegal immigrant or con artist is much less.
The REAL ID program faces stiff opposition from civil liberties groups.
