Chipped teeth are very common. There are so many different reasons for a chipped tooth. Many times a tooth becomes chipped because of what someone eats hardy candy or any other type of hard food substance. Injuries and accidents can also cause chipped teeth.

Teeth can become weaker, especially if they are not properly cared for. When cavities take hold of a tooth, it can be more apt to chip or break. When this takes place, the cavity can spread throughout the tooth and go deeper toward the roots. This can cause even further damage to the tooth, causing it to chip or break even more.

For this reason, chipped teeth or broken teeth should be addressed immediately. Houston dental patients should never wait to have these oral problems taken care of. According to Dr. Amanda Canto, founder of Cosmetic Dentists of Houston, says there are multiple options to addressing a chipped or broken tooth, but it all depends on the severity of the tooth fracture.

“If it is a small chip, then definitely a direct bonded composite can be used, but that will have to be replaced more often as the composite or resin starts to stain,” Dr. Canto says. “The more lifelike and longer lasting alternative would be a porcelain veneer.”

A porcelain veneer is placed over the tooth to restore it to full size and beauty. Another positive about receiving a porcelain veneer is that if it were to ever need a root canal, the dental surgery procedure can be done without causing damage to the veneer.

“If the fracture of the tooth is very severe, then definitely a crown would be more appropriate,” Dr. Canto says. “It all depends on the extent of the fracture, which should be evaluated by your dentist.”
